The Sun in Vedic Astrology is also a significator of the Soul. It is also recognised as significator for the small-self, the ego, the ahamkara which tells one and all that everything is “I, Me, Mine”. The outward-going mind identifies with all that it sees and takes the form of that, hence the grasping and selfish attitude. Worship of the Sun takes us from the small self to the overarching Self which is one with parabrahman, that which is all that is. Hence, the Sun is pre-eminent and most esteemed, most desirable of this world.

However pre-eminent the ahamkara, the small-self is, this is not the nature – nor the attitude – of the Sun. The Sun is the embodiment of humbleness, it gives example of humility and serves one and all irrespective of caste, station in life, rank, and riches. As humble servant, the Sun is ready to illuminate life, and as significator of the Self, it is ready to illuminate all that is within the human. The Sun illuminates the way home and shows the path, that eternal path of dharma, r’ta, the eternal order of the Universe. This is the basis, the path, the order for the human to follow. A simple mantra: follow dharma.

When we look the value that the Sun as pre-eminent and most esteemed, most desirable of this world, we find the Sun gives its effulgence, heat, magnetism to the Earth and all who dwell on Earth. In looking to the value the Sun has for us, we also find that the Sun satisfies our needs, by what we obtain from sunlight, Vitamin D. Moreover, plants obtain photosynthesis and subsequently become food for us, and the highest part of the food is absorbed by the blood and becomes part of the human reproductive cycle. Once again, we find that the Sun takes us from the small self to the larger Self.
