The Sun, through giving of light, heat and magnetism, bears and sustains life on the Earth. Without light and heat, there is no life. The Sun sustains life through generation of energy, maintains life with light energy and aids the return of life to its source through the agni principle.

Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms’ activities (energy transformation). Thus, through the Sun do many forms of life obtain their sustenance, including plant, animal and human. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.

The Sun as sustainer of life is significator of Sri Vishnu, form of the Omnipresent Divine, who is pictured as having the Conch (symbol of the Primeval word or Sound), the Wheel (symbol of Time) and the Mace (symbol of Might and Majesty). Some others assert that the Universe is a manifestation of Vishnu and that it has its being in Vishnu Himself. They declare that the emergence, subsistence and merging of the Universe are all caused by Vishnu.

Of course, nothing in the Universe can be made without a maker. What, then, must be the nature of the maker of the Cosmos? He must have limitless power, unbounded glory, and perfect omniscience. It is not possible for every one to visualise such a phenomenon, though it is the very fulfillment of the purpose of each one’s life!

It is the importance of Karma that necessitated the triple aspects of Divinity, Brahma (who causes creation), Vishnu (who supports and sustains) and Maheswara (who dissolves and destroys). It is the Law of Karma that rules the motions of the stars, the planets, the galaxies and other heavenly bodies in space.
