Guru Pournima

Full Moon, Guru Poornima

Guru Purnima is on 12 July. This year, the Guru Purnima occurs with a Full Moon in Sagittarius. What is unique this year, and only happens every 12 years, is that Jupiter will be exalted in the 8th house of transcendence in 2014. We look to the significance of this event, and consider the spiritual energies around this event and the following days.

Guru Purnima is a Hindu festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers. This festival traditionally celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists, to thank their teachers. It is marked by ritualistic respect to the Guru, Guru Puja. The Guru Principle is a thousand times more active on the day of Guru pournima than on any other day. The word Guru is derived from two words, 'Gu' and 'Ru'. The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. Gurus are believed by many to be the most necessary part of lives. On this day, disciples offer puja (worship) or pay respect to their Guru (Spiritual Guide). It falls on the day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadha (June–July) of the Shaka Samvat, Indian national calendar and Hindu calendar.

On this Guru Pournima day, at 3.25 (AEST), the ascendant will be in Mula, the nakshatra which holds the Central Sun of all Universes. At 3.25, the time puts Jupiter, the celestial guru, in the 8th house of higher spiritual learning and transcendence. Jupiter is the teacher of these higher spiritual learnings, so offer some yellow flowers or yellow water (water with turmeric) ... this will open a gateway...

For some, Mars on this day will be transiting the 9th house of the sacred and the spiritual. So a powerful day for a full moon meditation. Very powerful day. For those who have been following the works of Cosmic Sai Baba, Jalarm, and the transmissions from others, this is an opportunity to honour Cosmic Sai Baba and his aspects as Jalarm, Alcheringa, White Eagle, Sanat Kumar, etc. It may also be a day when a new teacher may arrive on the scene, or that people, through their vimsottari dasa, find a guru.

There are those who are alarming about the conjuctions that occur around this time of Guru Pournima. Venus will go sandi in Taurus as it gets ready to move into Gemini. Rahu moves to Virgo and Ketu moves to Pisces on the morning of 13th. Ketu - inner inquiry in the natural 12th house - will influence Jupiter exalted in the sign of Cancer. Ketu will mutually aspect Jupiter by trineand will be aspected in return by Jupiter's trikona. This is all good for spiritual advance, for Guru is the strongest spiritual teacher amongst the planets.

The other part to this is Mars moving toward Libra and Rahu - ever retrograde - moving towards Mars. The teaching is Sani vat Rahu, Rahu behaves like Saturn and will be encroaching towards Mars: Mar and Saturn, both planets of strong energy, are immortal enemies. Ditto Rahu v. Mars, Rahu will cause a mini planetary war with Mars as it passes the threshold of Libra, retrograding into Virgo as Mars leaves Virgo for Libra. On the same day, Venus will move to Gemini and Mars will move to Libra. This will all happen on a Sunday so there is need to pay attention to fire, electrical appliances, take extra care on the roads (Rahu is smoky and occludes, smokes things, hides and covers .... so especial care is needed along with visual surveillance of extremities: don't bump into things you don't need to bump into!
